Administrative and biographical history: William Cobb Gilbertson (c.1768-1854), grandfather of the depositor, was born in Middlesex, but later lived at Dolclettwr in the parish of Llangynfelyn, and Cefngwyn in the parish of Elerch, both in Cardiganshire. He was appointed as an Attorney at the Court of the King's Bench in 1791. He was appointed as deputy lieutenant of Cardiganshire and a captain in the Cardiganshire battalion for Supplementary Militia in 1797, at the time of the Fishguard invasion. He became a Justice of the Peace for the same area in 1800, as well as a Commissioner, under the Income Act, for Genau'r-glyn and Llanbadarn, Cardiganshire. In 1802 he became a Commissioner for managing Stamp Duty and of the Property Act in 1803. His son, Lewis Gilbertson (1815-1896) was a cleric, and became Vice-Principal of Jesus College, Oxford; his son, the Rev. Canon Lewis Gilbertson, MA (alive 1927) was also a cleric.
Scope and content: Papers relating to ecclesiastical matters in the diocese of St David's, 1764-1808, including mandates for the admission of clergy, 1764-1805; and letters, 1781-1808; and the papers of William Cobb Gilbertson, 1779-1808, relating to his appointments to various posts in Cardiganshire; and the sword used by William Cobb Gilbertson during the raising of the militia against the French invasion of 1797.
